Science, Technology and the Future

DISCOVER is one of the last media brands standing from a great interest in science and futurism that started many such magazines in the 1980s.

In 2008, I joined the art department under creative director Michael Di Ioia and editorial director Patti Adcroft as they sought to move the magazine forward in the 21st century. As leadership changed and ownership changed, we managed to keep sales and subscriptions up with a loyal audience during one of the newsstand industry’s most trying periods following the financial crisis of 2008.

We completed a wholesale re-design, developed in house for the 30th anniversary, with significant contributions from typographer Joshua Darden (including a handsome new logo), renewing the magazine’s brand. It was poised for growth in an industry defined mostly by decline, which contributed to its successful sale at the end of 2010 to Kalmbach Publishing Company.
